Initials: meaning and symbolism

An initial is shorthand for a whole name and carries the same weight without announcing it. We most often tattoo the letters of children, a partner or a parent, frequently several side by side. Matching pieces are popular, where two people each wear the other's letter, as are family sets that grow over time.

The second option is a monogram – two or three letters interwoven into a single mark. That works more like a seal than text and suits people who want something personal but not legible at a glance.

Designing initials

With a single letter the typeface carries the whole piece, because there is nothing to hide behind. The difference between script, calligraphy and a plain sans-serif is far greater on one letter than across a whole sentence, so it is worth seeing the same letter in several forms side by side. Ornate calligraphic capitals also carry such intricate strokes that they merge at small sizes – there we reach for something simpler.

With several letters it comes down to spacing and order. Letters tight together read as a monogram; wider gaps read as a list. If you plan to add more later, say with another child, we will lay them out so that is possible without the whole thing looking improvised. And be aware of very small placements: fingers are where tattoos fade fastest and need touching up soonest.
